Who is Joey Merlino in 2025?

If you’ve been anywhere near South Philadelphia lately, chances are you’ve heard the buzz — lines stretching down Broad Street, the smell of sizzling rib-eye on the grill, and the unmistakable sign that reads Skinny Joey’s Cheesesteaks.
Yes, the name that once made headlines for other reasons has taken on a brand-new meaning in 2025 — one that’s all about good food, strong values, and a resilient opportunity chance done right.

A Philly Story Rewritten

Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino has always been a familiar name in the city. But today, that name stands for something different — a story of reinvention, resilience, and community.

In 2025, Joey has traded old battles for a new mission: building something lasting in the heart of the city that made him. He’s not just running a restaurant — he’s setting records. Skinny Joey’s Cheesesteaks has become one of the fastest-rising names in Philly’s food scene, drawing crowds that rival — and in some cases surpass — the century-old legends.

Setting New Cheesesteak Standards

At 3020 S Broad Street, steps away from Philadelphia’s iconic sports stadiums, Skinny Joey’s opened its doors earlier this year.
From day one, the demand has been overwhelming — sometimes with two-hour lines forming outside. Locals, tourists, and die-hard Philly fans all want to experience what many are calling the new face of the cheesesteak game.

So what’s different?

Authenticity & Flavor: Each sandwich is made with high-quality meat, fresh bread from local bakeries, and a recipe that’s been refined to perfection.

Location & Energy: There’s nothing like grabbing a fresh cheesesteak before a game at the stadium — and Joey knew exactly where to plant his flag.

Brand & Story: The “Skinny Joey” name now symbolizes loyalty, pride, and the Philly work ethic. It’s not just a restaurant — it’s a message: people can change, build, and win on their own terms.

The Entrepreneurial Pivot

While others talk about change, Joey shows it. He’s taken his natural charisma, leadership, and business instincts and built them into something that creates jobs and gives back to the city.

He’s also tapped into the digital era — through The Skinny with Joey Merlino Podcast, social media, and local engagement — sharing stories of growth, entrepreneurship, and staying true to yourself no matter what life throws your way.

For Joey, this isn’t about the past. It’s about showing what happens when someone takes all that life experience and channels it into something that feeds people — literally and figuratively.

Giving Back — The Thanksgiving Turkey Drive

This November, Joey and his team are planning a Turkey Drive on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at their brand-new Chichester, Delaware County location — the second of what’s expected to be many Skinny Joey’s Cheesesteaks restaurants across the region.

The event will give away hundreds of turkeys to local families in need — no cameras, no press stunts, just genuine community support.
For Joey, helping people isn’t new. He’s always believed that when you’ve got a platform, you use it to lift others up.

What’s Next for Skinny Joey’s Cheesesteaks

The brand’s expansion is only getting started. After breaking records in Philadelphia, the next wave of Skinny Joey’s Cheesesteaks locations is already in motion. Each shop will carry the same formula that made the flagship a hit: real Philly taste, a sense of pride, and Joey’s personal touch on every detail.

The long-term goal?
To take Philly flavor nationwide — without ever losing its roots.

The Netflix Effect

A highly anticipated Netflix docuseries featuring parts of Joey’s past is set to premiere in late October 2025, bringing his name back into millions of homes worldwide. But Joey won’t be promoting it — because his focus is squarely on the future.

As he’s said privately and publicly: “I did my debt to Society, I did my time, like MEN, me and my friends but I'm not looking in the rear-view mirror"

And he means it.

A Legacy Built the Right Way

Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino’s 2025 chapter is one of evolution, not escape.
From South Philly kid to entrepreneur, restaurateur, podcast host, and community builder — he’s showing the world what redemption looks like when it’s powered by hard work and heart.

So if you’re wondering Who is Joseph Merlino in 2025?
He’s the guy proving that loyalty, pride, and second chances can still win — one cheesesteak at a time.

My son and I stopped by Skinny Joey’s for a bite to eat before a Phillies game, and I must say the cheesesteak was one of the best steaks I had ever had. It definitely rivals other steak shops in the surrounding area. This is going to be my new steak joint everytime i come to the Philly area, keep it going Joey!!
